Serengeti Hot Balloon Safari
Embarking on a hot air balloon safari in the Serengeti offers an unparalleled experience, allowing one to drift above the iconic African savannah and witness incredible wildlife and breathtaking sunrises.
About
A balloon safari offers a bird’s-eye view of the breathtaking African landscape. This exhilarating experience allows one to hover over vast herds of animals and witness the beauty of the Serengeti, one of the destinations where this activity takes place. Mornings are the ideal time to embark on this adventure, as the colorful view of the heavens is awe-inspiring. From the balloon’s elevated position, one can enjoy a 360-degree view of the safari, featuring migrating wildebeests and zebras, as well as gazelle and antelopes that reside in the park. The balloons can accommodate up to 16 people, and it is advisable to book in advance, given the high demand for this activity. Incorporating a balloon safari into your itinerary is possible, and we can include it in any of the tours we offer in the Serengeti National Park.
What to expect
You will be woken up by a cup of tea at around 5:30 am and taken to the balloon take-off point, where you will meet your qualified balloon pilot. You will witness the team inflating the large, multi-coloured balloon. As the sun begins to rise, you will climb into the wicker basket with the help of the crew. The basket is equipped with seats and safety belts and can accommodate 6 up to 16 passengers. Once everyone is on board, the sandbags are removed and the balloon slowly rises into the cool morning air.
The balloon is propelled by the wind and the pilot’s control of hot air from the gas burners. This allows the balloon to rise or fall according to the pilot’s direction. The flight lasts approximately 45 minutes and is followed by a team of ground vehicles. The balloon eventually lands gently on the plains. The ground crew celebrates with guests by offering them a glass of chilled champagne while the pilot prepares their personal flight certificates. Afterward, guests can enjoy a full English breakfast cooked on the burners of the balloon. Later, they can take a leisurely game drive back to the lodge or campsite.
When is the best time of year for ballooning in Serengeti?
It is a matter of great fortune that the weather in the Serengeti region is conducive to ballooning nearly every day of the year.
Serengeti balloon fly in the following areas every morning: Central Serengeti all year round; Ndutu Area, Ngorongoro Conservation Area/Serengeti from Dec 20-Mar 31; Western Serengeti from May 15-Oct; and Northern Serengeti from Jun 15-Jan 15. Wildlife sightings vary depending on the time and location, but balloon rides offer a unique opportunity for viewing.
In Serengeti, it mostly rains in the afternoons, evenings or night time, early morning is the driest part of the day and that’s when they fly!
During the rainy months of March, April, and May, some companies will still offer tours, although actual flight will depend on the weather conditions – if it is too rainy or windy, the flight will be canceled and your payment will be fully refunded. If you have still had ample time left for your holiday, the flight can be rescheduled to another day. Thankfully, the dry season is also the perfect time to witness the Great Migration, so floating silently above this wondrous spectacle means you’re in for a treat of a lifetime.
How long does a Serengeti Balloon Safari last?
Serengeti balloon flight lasts approximately an hour. It may be a little more or it may be a little less, it depends on the wind speed and direction on the day. The pilots in charge of the flight prioritize safety and are trained to identify the safest landing spots in the area. In the event that the conditions during the flight become unsuitable, the pilots will make a decision to land before the scheduled conclusion of the flight.
The whole experience is about 5 hours, from the pre-dawn night drive to the safety briefing, spicy beverage and flight, to the champagne toast on landing, our sumptuous Out of Africa breakfast and our short return drive to your safari guide to continue with the rest of your morning’s activities.
How high can a hot air balloon fly?
On average, recreational hot air balloons typically fly between 1,000 and 3,000 feet (305 to 914 meters) above the ground.
Serengeti Balloon Safaris prioritizes the safety of its passengers during every flight. As such, the company has established a self-imposed maximum flying height of 2,000 feet (610 meters) above ground. This altitude provides unparalleled views that are truly stunning and awe-inspiring.
