Standard Package

Karatu Simba Lodge is located approximately four kilometers from the main road to the entry of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and is a 30-minute drive from the gate of Lake Manyara National Park.

Accommodations

Accommodation at Karatu Simba Lodge consist of individual twin, double or triple cottages or rondavels with canvas walls, each with its own solid attached bathroom and shower. The rooms are tastefully and simply decorated with hand-made furniture of African hardwood, and each unit has its own deck with safari chairs for relaxing and viewing the pastoral setting. You may even spot a troop of baboons foraging in the recently harvested barley fields or local cowboys tending their herds. Fall asleep to the call of the bush baby and Montane nightjar.

All rooms have a view of the forest, fields and far distant hills. At Karatu Simba, the rooms are beautifully and simply decorated with local fabrics and hard wood furniture, and each bed has a mosquito net. Full amenities are provided, and the rooms are solar-powered with solar-heated water. There is a power strip for battery charging, and each room has a torch (flashlight) and umbrella for your use during your stay with us.

A whistle is also provided in case you need to alert the security guards. As the solar lighting may be dimmer than you’re used to, we highly recommend that you bring a headlamp or “book light” for reading in bed at night.

Due to our solar electrical system, it’s not possible to use a hair dryer at Karatu Simba. We kindly request that you don’t attempt to plug in a hair dryer, as it will most likely blow the system, resulting in a loss of power to the entire lodge.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival – Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro airport, you will be picked up from the airport by a Kilele Climb Tours representative and conveyed to your accommodation in Moshi/Arusha where you will overnight, relax, and prepare in anticipation of the adventures to come, restore and enjoy your first taste of Africa. Depending on your arrival time, you may have your pre-safari briefing today; if not, it will take place early tomorrow morning.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

  • Distance & Drive time: Arusha to Tarangire takes about 2.5 to 3 hours (106 km/65mi)- Tarangire to Karatu takes about 1.5 – 2hours (96km/59mi)

Pick up at 7:00 AM from your hotel in Arusha and depart for Tarangire National park with a picnic lunch for a full day game drive. Tanzania’s third largest National park is known for its majestic baobab trees that dot the landscape, dwarfing the animals that feed beneath them. The Tarangire River is the centerpiece of this park which is famous for some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa. Here you may see lion, leopard, cheetah, lesser kudu, buffalo, oryx, eland, giraffe, and zebra. After a full day in the park, we will drive to the Luxury Lodge where a delicious dinner awaits you, and spend the night.

Day 3: Karatu to Ngorongoro Crater

  • Distance & Drive Time: Karatu to NCA takes about 30 minutes (25 km/15mi)

After an early breakfast you will have a sort drive to the Ngorongoro entrances and few minutes you start descending to 600m down the crater for game drive. The Ngorongoro Crater is almost 600m deep, approximately 20 km wide and the massive caldera is home to an amazing variety of animals. On your game drive you have the possibility of seeing all different kinds of mammals ranging from the Big Five – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard – to Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles and mountain reedbucks. You might also see spotted hyenas, and some of the more than 500 bird species of the area. After a picnic lunch in the crater and some more game viewing, you will leave the crater in the evening and travel back to tented camp/lodge where you will be spending the second night.

Day 4: Lake Manyara National Park to Zanzibar

  • Distance & Time: Lake manyara to Arusha takes about 2.5 to 3 hours (113 km/70mi)

You will depart the camp at around 0700hrs and head to Lake Manyara National Park for your final game drive. The park is renowned for its elusive tree climbing lions and diverse bird life. The shallow and alkaline Lake Manyara covers a large area of park and it is the seasonal home to thousands of flamingos – an awesome (pink) sight. However more than 400 other species are also found here as well as some wonderful mammals. Troops of monkeys live in the forests, giraffes, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and wildebeests on the grassy plains and elephants. After your tour around the beautiful lake and the amazing ground water forest. After lunch, you will head back to Arusha, where you will arrive in the late afternoon where you will take your flight to Zanzibar (Stone town).

Day 5- 7: Zanzibar Beach

After breakfast, you will go on a guided tour of stone town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience tracing the footsteps of Arab Sultans on Zanzibar and ponder on the interesting historical sites and labyrinths. See actual Zanzibar doors famous for its unique architectural tradition.

After lunch, we will proceed to a tour of the countryside to the spice plantations. This place has a rich history and you will be welcomed by the rich aroma of spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. Afterwards, we take you to Nungwi for your 2 nights’ accommodation.

Day 8 Departure

On your last day, enjoy the rest of your stay by relaxing in the pool or in the beach while taking in as much sunshine as you can. In the afternoon, we will take you to the airport for your onward destination.

    On this week-long adventure, you will have plenty of opportunities to get active (and to relax). We take you to the less-visited Arusha National Park before setting out to spend time in three of Tanzania’s natural wonders, spending a night in each location.  A safari in Arusha National Park is a great start for a safari tour in northern Tanzania. This park is easily accessible for a day tour from Arusha city. You visit what we call the ‘mini-Serengeti’; an area where you often see large groups of giraffes and buffalo.

    After Arusha, our first destination in the Northern Circuit will be Tarangire, a park famed for its diversity and with plenty to see at any time, before we head for scenic Lake Manyara, a favorite for both birds and animals. Next, we will visit the famous Ngorongoro Conservation Area with its incomparable crater, before we head for Serengeti National Park with its endless plains – and seemingly endless animals, Next, we fly to Zanzibar Island (Stone town) where warm turquoise waters and the white sand beaches on the Indian Ocean await.

    Day 2: Arusha to Arusha National Park

    • Distance & Drive time: Arusha to Arusha National Park takes about 20 to 30 Minutes(50km/31mi)

    You’ll start the Day with a short drive to Arusha National Park, this will take about 20-30 minutes (from Arusha). From here we’ll start driving through the beautiful green surroundings of Arusha National Park to spot some wild animals. All this with a stunning view of Mt. Meru on the background.

    After, your local guide, safari ranger will take you on a walking safari. The walking safari gives you a whole new and unique perspective of the national park and it’s super exciting! The scents and sounds of the African bush are best experience by foot. Here you’ll be walking alongside wild, freely roaming animals in their natural habitat. Your ranger is experienced and knows what you can or can’t to near wild animals. Listen to him, and you will have the best possible experience. Apart from sharing loads of knowledge about the animals you might encounter, your guide will also tell you all about the unique flora & fauna of Arusha National Park.

    During the walking safari some unique sights will be visited, like the impressive waterfall that hides in the heart of the park, the Ngurdoto Crater and lake Momella, where thousands of pink flamingos can be often be spotted.

    What to see on the walking safari?

    Many visitors come here hoping to spot the elusive colubus monkey. Giraffes majestically walk through the landscape and other animals like buffalo, zebra’s, warthog, and blue monkeys are waiting to be spotted. This day-trip is also great for bird-spotters, as Arusha has a great variety of birds like trogons, starlings, turacos and thousands of migrating flamingos.

    On this day, after breakfast, we drive to Lake Manyara National Park, a small but diverse park 122km west of Arusha. The park is renowned for its elusive tree climbing lions and diverse bird life. The shallow and alkaline Lake Manyara covers a large area of the park and it is the seasonal home to thousands of flamingos- an awesome(pink) sight. However more than 400 other bird species are also found here as well as some wonderful mammals. Troops of monkeys like in the forests, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and wildebeests on grassy plains and elephants.

    After your tour around the beautiful lake and the amazing ground water forest you will be transferred to our lodge for dinner, a digestif by the fire perhaps, conversation, and a reviewing in the mind’s eye the images of the wilds accrued during the day before retiring for our well-earned rest.

    Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater to Central Serengeti.

    After an early breakfast, we boot up and head out towards the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest volcanic caldera. Almost 20km wide, approximately 600 m deep and known for its large variety of wildlife, the caldera, formed at the explosion of a volcano some three million years ago, was once taller than Kilimanjaro. A self-contained paradise, the caldera hosts an abundance of the finest animal life on the planet. In addition to the Big Five the various springs attract animals such as wildebeest, gazelle, reedbuck, and more than 500 bird species. At approximately 1430hrs we head towards the Serengeti, arriving at our lodgings in a high-grade tented camp at roughly 6:00 p.m. The Serengeti National Park, the Serenget, ‘Endless Plain’ in Maa, the tongue of the Maasai is the largest park in Tanzania and home to diverse landscapes and habitats such as grassy plains, swamps, lakes, savannah and mountains and all of the creatures there inhabiting.

    Day 6: Serengeti National Park.

    After breakfast enter into the corners of plains Serengeti for a full day to explore the Serengeti with both morning and afternoon game drives. The Serengeti National Park is the jewel in the crown of Tanzania’s game parks and offers arguably the best game viewing in Africa. The setting is perfect –a sea of endless plains that stretches to the horizon, dotted with the occasional acacia tree and termite mound. This Savanna is home to huge herds of Wildebeest that every year make the mass migration North, through crocodile infested rivers, in a frenzied mixture of mating and galloping that is driven by instinct. Prides of lion rule here, their hungry gaze sweeping the Savannah for a chance to attack the thousands of eland, impala and gazelle. Solitary leopard stakes out their place in the high branches of the acacia tree and herds of elephant’s roam at will. This is the Africa that you have always dreamed about.     Day 7: Serengeti National park to Zanzibar Island.

    After breakfast, morning game drives at Serengeti National Park. On your outward journey to the Seronera Airstrip, you will enjoy some more game viewing before you leave the Serengeti National park in the late morning, you will be transferred to Airstrip where we arrive in the late morning for your flight to Zanzibar (Stone Town).

    With an incredible experience and many memories to cherish, this is when you say goodbye to your safari crew, fly to Zanzibar Island.  A beautiful flight with exceptional views. In the coming days, you have the opportunity to enjoy the sun, sea and beach on the tropical island of Zanzibar.

    Stone Town & Countryside Tour

    On your arrival at Zanzibar Airport, you’ll be met by your Kilele Climb representative and transferred to Stone town for Lunch.

    After lunch, you will go on a guided tour of stone town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience tracing the footsteps of Arab Sultans on Zanzibar and ponder on the interesting historical sites and labyrinths. See actual Zanzibar doors famous for its unique architectural tradition.

    We will proceed to a tour of the countryside to the spice plantations. This place has a rich history and you will be welcomed by the rich aroma of spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. In the evening, we will head north of Zanzibar to Nungwi, Michamvi or Kendwa beach, a top favorite for its white sand, clear waters and romantic sunsets.       Day 1: Arrival – Arusha

      Arrive at Kilimanjaro airport, you will be picked up from the airport by a Summit Climb representative and conveyed to your accommodation in Moshi/Arusha where you will overnight, relax, and prepare in anticipation of the adventures to come, restore and enjoy your first taste of Africa. Depending on your arrival time, you may have your pre-safari briefing today; if not, it will take place early tomorrow morning.

      Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National park.

      Pick up at 7:00 AM from your hotel in Arusha and depart for Tarangire National park with a picnic lunch for a full day game drive. Tanzania’s third largest National park is known for its majestic baobab trees that dot the landscape, dwarfing the animals that feed beneath them. The Tarangire River is the centerpiece of this park which is famous for some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa. Here you may see lion, leopard, cheetah, lesser kudu, buffalo, oryx, eland, giraffe, and zebra. After a full day in the park, we will drive to the camp/Lodge where a delicious dinner awaits you, and spend the night.

      Day 3: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

      After breakfast, you will travel via the cooler highlands towards the southern Serengeti and at midday you will reach the plains of the Serengeti National Park. This park is the largest in Tanzania and has a diversity of habitats and landscapes – short grass plains, savannah, thick bush, swamps, and lakes. Bizarre rock formations called kopjes dot the grassy landscape where predators are often seen. The Serengeti is famous for the yearly migration when hundreds of thousands of wildebeests and zebras trek to find fresh grass and water. You will overnight at lodge/Campsite located central Serengeti (Seronera Area).

      Day 4: Serengeti National Park

      Day 5: Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater.

      After breakfast, morning game drives at Serengeti National Park. On your outward journey to the park gate, you will enjoy some more game viewing before you leave the Serengeti National Park in the early afternoon to continue your journey to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for dinner and overnight. You will overnight at Lodge/Campsite located on the ridge of Ngorongoro rim.

      Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater Tour to Lake Eyasi

      • Distance & Drive Time: NCA to Lake Eyasi takes about 2 hours (90 km/36.6mi)

      Starting early, you have half day to explore the Ngorongoro Crater, The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. It has a massive floor of about 260 sq.km/161 sq. mi

      With a depth of over 200 feet. The 5- hours game drive on the crater floor will show you a lot of animal action. Keeping the camera ready is definitely recommended. The African elephant, buffalo, Black rhino, hippos, Hyenas, Cheetahs and Lions are found in plenty. Post the picnic lunch at the beautiful Hippo pool, continue with game viewing before earlier evening, you will begin a steep ascend to the top exit of the crater. With a 2 hrs. drive left to your accommodation in Lake Eyasi, the day will come to a close, freshly made delicious dinner is kept ready for you at your Campsite/Lodge. All these days of the safari, will have you quite tired and a good rest is essential. The next day you will begin the last leg of your safari.

      Day 7: Lake Eyasi

      Today, we will have the opportunity to interact with the Bushmen, specifically the Hadzabe Tribe. They live in groups and rely on hunting with bow and arrows, as well as gathering roots, tubers, and wild fruits to survive. Their way of life is similar to that of humankind during the Stone Age. During our visit, we will learn about how they adapt to their harsh environment and the challenges they face to continue their nomadic lifestyle.

      We will also have the chance to meet the Datoga tribe, who are skilled blacksmiths. This trade has been developed over centuries and is still practiced in the same way today. The Datoga tribe produces arrowheads for the Hadzabe and brass trinkets, some of which may be available for purchase.

      After completing your morning activities, you can return to your lodge to relish a hot lunch and relax by the swimming pool. This will give you a chance to refresh your mind and body before proceeding with the rest of your day’s itinerary. Additionally, you can enjoy a cool drink at the bar or relax on your private balcony while admiring the stunning views of the beautiful lake.

      Day 8: Lake Manyara National Park to Arusha

      • Distance & Time: Lake Manyara to Arusha takes about 2.5 to 3 hours (113 km/70 mi)

      On the last day of your safari, you will have an early start you will depart the Lodge at around 0730hrs and head to Lake Manyara National Park for your final game drive. The park is renowned for its elusive tree-climbing lions and diverse bird life. The shallow and alkaline Lake Manyara covers a large area of the park and it is the seasonal home to thousands of flamingos- an awesome(pink) sight. However, more than 400 other bird species are also found here as well as some wonderful mammals. Troops of monkeys like in the forests, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and wildebeests on grassy plains and elephants.

      After your tour around the beautiful lake and the amazing ground water forest you will be transferred back to Arusha/Airport in the afternoon via curio shops where you can grab some souvenirs to take back home with you. With an incredible experience and loads of memories to cherish, this is the time you say goodbye to your safari crew.
