Ngorongoro Serena Lodge

Ngorongoro Serena Lodge

About this Property

Tanzania’s prehistoric Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Eighth Wonder of the World, has yawned heavenward for millennia. Deep within its immense walls is a breath-taking blue-green landscape dotted with plains, lakes and forests; an eerie, otherworldly “land that time forgot” thick with massive bull elephants, rhinos, wildebeests and the highest concentration of lions in Africa.

Nestled high above the plains into the Crater’s jagged rim, cloaked in river stone and indigenous vines, Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is barely visible to the naked eye. Framed by arched stone passages and timbered decks, its torch-lit walls are adorned with stylized cave paintings. At the stone heart of the lodge burns a glowing fire, which is kept constantly alight. Rooms are looped around the Crater rim. Each has its own rock-enclosed balcony, and all enjoy completely uninterrupted views of the volcanic Amphitheatre far below. Our Ngorongoro hotel lodge is a place that feels as ancient as the Crater itself, yet no modern comfort has been spared in an effort to bring you the best safari adventure in Africa and one of the most unique travel experiences in the world.

Accommodation

The 74 guest rooms and one suite at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge blend the almost indescribable beauty and magnitude of the Ngorongoro Crater with unparalleled standards for comfort and service. Clinging to the Crater rim beneath river stone and a cloak of native vines, our accommodation is so seamlessly entwined with the landscape, guests can’t help but feel as one with the natural surroundings. With a private stone balcony opening onto the blue-green vastness of the Crater floor below, it’s like you’re living alone in the “cradle of mankind.”

Interiors feature brass lamps, embossed leather headboards, wildwood mirrors, Maasai carvings and stylised cave paintings. The guest experience is enhanced with modern comforts like complimentary wireless Internet and 24-hour room service.

About this Property

Lemala Ngorongoro is intimately set in a delightful ancient acacia forest close to the rim of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater. As it is located next to the quiet Lemala crater access road on the eastern side, a key advantage of staying at Lemala Ngorongoro is the quick and easy drive down on to the crater floor in the morning; Lemala guests usually have an hour’s head start over others descending via the far busier Seneto crater access road on the western rim. And of course, can stay later in the afternoon before returning to camp. As Africa’s game is most active in the early morning and late afternoon this means better wildlife experiences for Lemala guests.

The mess tent is beautifully furnished with grand sofas, lamps, bookshelves and corner cabinets in old wood, chests and rugs. In the evening, guests can gather around the campfire to exchange tales of the day’s safari followed by a sumptuous hearty meal.

Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge

Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge

About this Property

Situated only a few hundred metres from the crater’s rim, Rhino Lodge offers easy access to the main gate and road descending into the crater.

Stretching out in two L-shaped rows from the main area are 24 semi-detached rooms set around a central courtyard. Outside each room is a long wooden deck overlooking a stretch of high montane forest. Bright Maasai blankets add a splash of colour to the whitewashed walls.

To freshen up after a long day in the crater, each room has a compact en-suite bathroom with a hot water shower.

As it can get quite cold in the area as the lodge is situated at an altitude of 2,200 metres above sea level, each room has its own wood-burning stove, which staff will light for you on cold evenings. You will also be supplied with hot water bottles that can be filled to keep the cold at bay.

Unpretentiously rustic, the lodge does not overlook the crater itself but enjoys glorious vistas of misty montane forest and distant Mount Oldeani. The well-kept grounds are regularly visited by local wildlife. Elephants, buffalo, waterbuck, zebra, hyena and Marabou storks sometimes wander across the lawns by day.

Accommodation

There are 24 guest rooms, all with verandah overlooking a stretch of high montane forest. Each room has its own shower, toilet and hand basin.

To keep away the cold each room has a wood-burning stove, and hot water bottles can be filled if you want one.

In the bar/dining-room there are two large fires which are a natural focus where our guests like to meet and exchange stories of the day.

Hot, tasty food is available from the buffet. And after dinner our Maasai staff may entertain you with some traditional dancing.
