This one-day hike via the Marangu Route offers a taste of Kilimanjaro’s trekking experience without committing to the full climb. Perfect for travelers with limited time or families with children, the hike provides a glimpse into the pristine rainforest, tropical wilderness, and breathtaking landscapes of Africa’s highest mountain.
The trail is famous as the path taken by the first Kilimanjaro explorers and is home to black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the forest canopy. The hike leads up to Mandara Hut (2,700 m) and back, with an optional side trip to Maundi Crater for panoramic views of northern Tanzania and Kenya.

Day 1
Moshi – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut – Moshi
- Travel time: 1 hour each way
- Pickup from your hotel at 07:30 am.
- Drive to Marangu Gate, register with Kilimanjaro National Park authorities, and begin hiking around 09:00 am.
- Trek through lush rainforest for 3–5 hours to reach Mandara Hut.
- Picnic lunch en route.
- Rest at Mandara Hut (30 minutes). Optional hike to Maundi Crater if time and weather permit.
- Descend via the same trail (approx. 2.5 hours) back to Marangu Gate.
- Return transfer to Moshi in the late afternoon.
Time on trail: Approx. 8 hours of hiking.
