Lake Chala Day Tour

Lake Chala Day Tour

Duration: 10 Hours

Lake Chala is a breathtaking caldera lake, believed to be the deepest inland water body in Africa. Fed by underground springs from Mount Kilimanjaro, the lake drains at a rate of about 10 million m³ per year. Its waters shift in color from deep blue to turquoise and green, framed by a dramatic 100-meter-high crater rim.

Straddling the border between Tanzania and Kenya, Lake Chala lies 49 km from Moshi and 8 km north of Taveta. With a mean depth of 81 meters and a diameter of 3 km, the lake covers 4.2 km². The surrounding area is rich in wildlife, including colobus monkeys, baboons, dik-dik, kudu, and diverse bird species. On clear days, Kilimanjaro towers in the background, adding to the lake’s spectacular scenery.

Activities include bird watching, game viewing, walking safaris, canoeing, and enjoying the tranquil crater rim. Swimming is possible but not advisable due to safety concerns.
